New York would be shut down if Knicks win NBA title over Jets winning a Super Bowl, says Steph

New York is one of those cities which boasts some of the most popular sporting franchises in America. In fact, their popularity has spread to the world. That said, the city’s fans are passionate about their teams, even dividing fan bases depending on the sport or area of the city. However, it has been a long time since the New York Knicks and Jets won a championship, which has left the city’s sports fans starving for victory.

First Take was live at the Fanatics Fest in New York City when host Molly Qerim asked Stephen A. Smith and Chris Russo which among the Knicks or the Jets winning a championship mattered to New Yorkers more. To this Smith said:

Orange and blue skies baby. I understand the Jets, I get all of that. But the New York Knicks, it's a different breed. If the New York Knicks were to win a championship in this city, the city would be shut down. People will be in the streets. Every corner, every crevice in the city will be going bananas.
Stephen A. Smith on First Take

At the end of his passionate rant, Chris Russo checked if Stephen A. Smith had a fever or something. He made it clear that nothing moves New York more than the Knicks.

That argument could be true. It has been evident time and again during Knicks games as to how passionate their fans are. Being based in Manhattan, the New York Knicks brings together everyone in the city.

Whereas the very fact that the New York Jets are out in New Jersey and sharing the stadium along with the Giants suggest they have a split fanbase. That said, it is not that the city of New York will not rejoice if Aaron Rodgers leads them to a Super Bowl. It’s just that if the Knicks win an NBA title, it will mean more.

Both New York Knicks and Jets are championship contenders

The New York Knicks had a terrific run in the NBA playoffs last season. Despite losing important pieces to injury, they battled fatigue to just stop one game short of making it to their first Eastern Conference Finals in 24 years. But that loss spurred the franchise to make important moves. Now with a solid core and a decent bench setup, the Knicks are NBA title contenders.

On the other hand, the New York Jets made a blockbuster move for Aaron Rodgers before last season. Only for their hopes to be dashed a few minutes into his first game wearing green. But that gave them a chance to analyze and make improvements to their roster to assist a healthy Rodgers to a Super Bowl.

Therefore, both New York franchises are gunning for glory. Stephen A. Smith might be right that the impact on fans will be different between those two franchises. But either of them winning one, after 50 years, will be monumental.
